National Marathon - 2008 Print E-mail

More than one marathon courses through Washington D.C. annually. But the National Marathon is unique.  The city's mayor, who runs annually, proudly boasts that it is the only marathon to contain all 26.2 miles completely within the limits of the district.

2008 marked the third annual running of the National Marathon, now sponsored by Sun Trust.  The secret is quickly spreading - the late winter event is a unique opportunity to experience a richly diverse city.  With only a few thousand runners, the 2008 running was still smaller than perhaps any other major city marathon.  But the rapid growth indicates a future as bright as Chicago or New York's grand events.

Philadelphia Marathon - 2007 Print E-mail

It's been called fast and flat.  Equally accurate but less often emphasize is the phrase fan-packed and freezing.

museum.jpgJust as you'd expected from a top-notch city like Philly, the Philadelphia Marathon is without a doubt one of the finest marathons in the USA. 

 

The race begins and ends at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The half mark is also at the museum, with two separate out and back course loops - no repetition between the first and second halves.  Those famous museum steps, instantly recognizable as the site of Rocky Balboa's gray sweat suit stair run and fist flying cheer, are part of the legacy of Philly.  It is suited that runners are pumped by the song Gonna Fly Now, more commonly known as the Rocky theme song, leading up to the gun start.
